USC fires coach Steve Sarkisian
The 43-year-old Helton has been on USC’s staff since 2010 after spending 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Memphis, most of it under head coach Tommy West. Kiffin hired him to be the Trojans’ quarterbacks coach, and he moved up to passing game coordinator in 2012. Although Roman has never been a head coach at any level, he knows the Pac-12 well after working as an assistant to Jim Harbaugh at Stanford before Harbaugh brought Roman along to the 49ers. He has brought this team together like not many people thought could happen. It’s hard enough to lose.
UW athletic sdirector Scott Woodward, who hired Sarkisian in 2009 despite no previous experience as a head coach at any level, released a statement to The Seattle Times: “It is evident that Steve is dealing with a serious personal matter and we wish him the best in facing whatever challenges lay ahead”. Earlier in the day he spent a few time with ESPN 710 in Seattle and he had this to offer up.
But Sarkisian failed to lift USC, and his alcohol-induced tirade at the booster event raised skepticism that he was the right man for the job.
Helton was one of only two coaches retained by Sarkisian, who guided the Trojans to a 9-4 record last season.
Sarkisian issued an apology the next day.
USC coach Steve Sarkisian’s tenure at UW was consistent but unspectacular.
“It breaks my heart to see how this has gone”.
At least now, Sarkisian will be able to focus on getting healthy.
This story is breaking and will be updated as more information becomes available. That is his profession and that is his passion. However, former players at Washington responded in social media that it was essentially Sark being Sark; one added the hashtag, #ThingsHaven’tChanged to a Twitter post.
Sarkisian has a solid coaching resume. His final season he got the program up to 9 wins.
Sarkisian used to coach under Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll during his time at USC.
In 2013, Haden fired Kiffin mid-season at an airport terminal as the team returned from another disappointing loss. The Trojans play in a recruiting hotbed and brought in the No. 2 class in the country in 2015 and now have the No. 9 class in the country for 2016, per 247Sports’ composite rankings. Things weren’t looking great, but there was a lot of season left. I have no doubt he will get the help he needs, but it will be hard to go into a kid’s house and talk to their parents about how their kid will be in good hands.
The talent-rich, well-funded USC football program has been roiling in trouble ever since a lengthy NCAA investigation of extra benefits given to Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush neared a conclusion six years ago.
