VW announces next-gen Phaeton will have pure electric version and “emotional”
More specifically, the German giant announced the switch over to installing only diesel powertrains which are equipped with SCR and AdBlue technologies for the European and North American markets “as soon as possible”, with the promise of equipping their models with the “best environmental technology”. In light of this, the Board of Management redefined the current project. That the company instead chose to bolster their brand presence with a new Phaeton and include an all-electric model in the line-up is indeed a bold move, it must be said.
There will also be a major development trust for the MQB platform, whereby VW’s passenger vehicle division will hold responsibility for development within the VW Group network.
VW indicates it will produce a greater number of hybrid models featuring ranges upwards of 311 miles (500 km), as well as EVs capable of traveling 186 miles (300 km) on a single charge.
Safe from being cut due to the ongoing dieselgate, Volkswagen’s upcoming second-gen Phaeton will spawn a fully electric derivative.
The next-generation Phaeton is expected to hit showrooms by about 2019-20.
The MEB Toolkit will allow electric tech to be used across all bodystyles and vehicle types in VW’s range. They say it will get an “emotional design” and will be packed with the next generation of assistance systems along with the newest crop of connectivity solutions.
Volkswagen has already confirmed the choice of engine for the Phaeton will be the W12 6.0-liter TSI engine that will also be powering the Bentley Bentayga, Continental and Flying Spur, and the next-gen Audi A8. Company chairman Dr. Herbert Diess said: “The Volkswagen brand is repositioning itself for the future”.
“We are very aware that we can only implement these innovations for the future of the Volkswagen brand effectively if we succeed with our efficiency program and in giving our product range a new focus”.
“We are working at top speed on these issues”.
