An armed man stayed barricaded inside Brookhaven Apartments on Union Street in Brookhaven for several hours Monday night, shooting at police through a door and out a window.
Strain says the standoff started because the man was resisting eviction. It was unclear whether the officer was wounded by gunfire or hit by shrapnel.
Authorities have not said whether the man was shot by police or killed himself. He confirmed that a Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team arrived on the scene and that the man was still barricaded as of 9 p.m. Strain said one officer suffered injuries but they weren’t life-threatening. Brookhaven, with about 12,000 residents, is 50 miles south of Jackson.
