NLDS: Cubs hit 6 homers in win over Cardinals
It’s what makes postseason baseball kinda rad. It was oddly fitting, because the Cubs seemed like a brand new team in that inning.
A monster in the Midway came alive Monday night with the 8-6 win over the creaking Cardinals at windy Wrigley Field to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the NLDS.
Before a bloodthirsty crowd of 44,276 in the first postseason game at Citi Field, the Mets broke their postseason scoring record as New York public enemy Chase Utley watched from the Los Angeles bench. Yes, the wind was blowing out, but these were all serious blasts.
The team made one of the biggest acquisitions of the offseason, signing 31-year-old pitcher Jon Lester to a six-year, $155 million deal.
Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer both hit home runs for the Royals. There is no denying Lackey’s postseason greatness, but his home and road splits this season speak for themselves.
Dexter Fowler added a solo shot in the eighth off Jonathan Broxton which gave the Cubs a four-run cushion. He has reached safely in all nine playoff plate appearances, the first time that has ever happened. The series is gearing up to be one for the books, and I’m excited to see how it plays out.
“I’m confident in Lackey”.
That power is no fluke, and it wasn’t just about the home runs. “It was a two-iron”. With Heyward on deck, Holliday grounded out to Castro at second to end the game and send the Cubs faithful homer with a victory.
Soler is 23. Bryant is the same age. To start off, Lynn walked Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro singled to right on a hit-and-run getting Rizzo to third. He got into trouble when he walked two batters to start the fourth.
Schwarber was the MVP of the Futures Game at the All-Star Game in Cincinnati this July. In Cole Hamels’ final game with Philadelphia. “Just felt that we were able to come back and we got within a couple there”. Chicago leads the series 2-1 and St. Louis is now facing elimination tomorrow.
Now, Lackey is 36 and will try to do something he has not done in 10 years when he takes the hill late on Tuesday afternoon at Wrigley Field to try and help the Cardinals survive and push the NLDS to a fifth and deciding game at Busch Series. Of course, the man that took the bump that night was none other than Chris Carpenter, who grunted himself through six innings and to the franchise’s eleventh World Series championship. Overall, Arietta faced the Cardinals four times with a 2-1 record and a 2.42 ERA. Wrigley wasn’t built until 1914.
The Cubs and Cardinals understood this would be a pivot point in a best-of-five matchup between two iconic rivals, with Arrieta becoming a breakout star in October and giving this young team so much confidence. He handled himself in the one game playoff against the Pirates and I expect nothing less than a spectacular performance from him tonight.
