Arrest made in fatal shooting of Memphis police officer
A police standoff in a Hollywood neighborhood that began as a domestic dispute ended when, investigators said, the barricaded subject took his own life.
“We just got a call, told us he’d been shot on his way to work, that he made his way back to the door a few kind of way”, Jerry Kelly, Olridge’s uncle, said.
Police have charged 29-year-old Tremaine Wilbourn, who was on probation for an armed bank robbery, with first-degree murder in Bolton’s death.
“Please continue to pray for this police department”, Memphis Police Department Director Toney Armstrong said at a news conference Sunday.
“It just doesn’t get any easier”, Armstrong told reporters on Sunday. Police say Clark surrendered peacefully after the shooting.
Olridge’s uncle reflected on how often this seems to happen in Memphis. Afterward, the street where the shooting had taken place was blocked off, officers milling around the house identified as the suspect’s.
His family said Clark, his wife and 9-year-old son moved to Cordova a year ago and, until Sunday, had no problems. Officer Olridge was transported to Regional One in critical condition where he later died from his injuries.
“Everything is very, very sketchy”, he said. “The whole shock of it has them completely gripped right now”.
Olridge worked the 2-10 p.m. shift at the Airways precinct. Brownlee declined to immediately provide further details or say whether additional charges would be filed in the case. Another said he heard what sounded like a hammer.
Olridge is also the fourth Memphis police officer to be fatally shot in slightly more than four years. He graduated from the police academy in February 2015 when he was interviewed by Fox Memphis. He has a fiancée who is four months pregnant, Armstrong said.
We’ve had two MPD officers shot and killed just a few months apart.
