Eli Walker back in Wales squad for Rugby World Cup
With Liam Williams ruled out for the rest of the World Cup with a foot injury, Warren Gatland has called-up the Ospreys’ Eli Walker to his squad.
However, he was called up as a replacement for the injured Leigh Halfpenny only to suffer a hamstring injury in the build-up and was released back to his region.
Walker is now in contention to play against South Africa in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Williams, who was concussed during the 28-25 victory over England a fortnight ago, returned to action for the Wallabies clash only to limp off nursing a foot problem as Wales’ injury count continued to pile up. “You won’t out-muscle them so needs must”.
“He’ll be out, I would say, for a number of months as opposed to weeks”, said Pivac.
The Ospreys man then had to withdraw from squad because of a hamstring injury but is now back to full fitness.
Having been capped by Wales at Under-16, 18 and 20, Walker’s progress was disrupted by shoulder and hamstring injuries.
The Northampton wing George North was moved in to the centre against Australia but with wings in short supply, the options look to be reduced to moving him back to his usual position and playing either Tyler Morgan or James Hook in the centre.
Gloucester back-rower Ross Moriarty filled Wales’ 31-man quota after Walker departed.
“He’s a huge player for us, and he did well again (on Saturday)”.
Could Rhys Patchell be next?
He’ll hope to stay in the squad longer this time.
Wales could well name a replacement for the injured Liam Williams today and we’ll be bringing you the news of who it is as we get it.
