The Surprising Reason Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio Turned Down ‘Steve
The film’s director, Danny Boyle, who was originally believed to be in conversation with DiCaprio regarding the role, admitted Jobs Powell and Apple “haven’t helped”, with CEO Tim Cook even labelling the film’s screenwriter Aaron Sorkin “opportunistic” for writing the film. “Steve Jobs” the movie seems to be a better tale than Steve Jobs the person.
Luckily enough, the producer thought that she would be a natural fit for the movie and she got the job.
Sir Jonathan, who worked alongside Jobs for 14 years, said it was natural for arguments to arise in the “creative process”, adding that “you could have had somebody who didn’t ever argue, but you wouldn’t have the phones that you have now”. “I remember saying out loud, ‘God, I’m so knackered.’ And the props woman, who I knew from a couple of other jobs, said, ‘Honey, we’re here for a lot longer than you are”.
Sorkin also wrote the screenplay for Oscar-winning 2010 movie “The Social Network”, about Mark Zuckerberg and the birth of Facebook.
As a film, Steve Jobs is entertaining, fascinating to watch and tough. The film is based on the official biography written by renowned biographer Walter Isaacson. Then, we see Jobs’ former girlfriend Chrisaan Brennan (Katherine Waterson), and his daughter, though Jobs denies this for the whole first half of the movie.
Seen across the years, the behind-the-scenes moments aim to shed light on Jobs the man, whether it’s his warm relationship with “work wife” Hoffman, being a protective older brother-type to Wozniak or seeking a pat on the back from father-figure Sculley.
Time Magazine: “What’s most hard about Sorkin’s intricate fantasy is not acknowledging Jobs’ darkness, but setting aside all hope of seeing the real man who inspired it”. They’re screaming. They’re clapping. His conscience makes him a visit just before he was to step up on a stage to launch a new product and it happened on three such occasions. Yes, we’re all a bit tired by the “Steve Jobs is a maniacal genius” narrative.
I’m going to be really interested to see what (if any) impact all of this has on the movie’s box office, which we should have a few idea of by Monday.
