Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Sheeran lead AMA noms
The nominees for the 2015 American Music Awards have been announced, and a talented upstart from Reading, Pa., named Taylor Swift leads the pack with six nominations.
Swift earned six AMA nominations, including nods for artist of the year, song of the year (“Blank Space”) and “collaboration of the year unleashed by T-Mobile”, as the AMAs call it. The latter was for “Bad Blood”, her pairing with Kendrick Lamar.
Last year’s big victor at the American Music Awards was the British boy band One Direction.
The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran, the English singer behind the smash hit ballad “Thinking Out Loud”, follow Swift with five nominations each.
The winners, to be announced at a gala in Los Angeles on November 22, will be determined through voting by fans, unlike the more prestigious Grammy Awards which are based on polling within the music industry. In addition, the artists will face competition from Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” featuring Charlie Puth and Mark Ronson, and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”. Fans can vote once per day for each category on various platforms: at AMAvote.com; by posting a status on Facebook that includes the nominee’s name and the category’s hashtag; and by posting a tweet that includes the nominee’s name or Twitter handle, the category name and the #AMAs hashtag.
All nominees for the event, which this year will be hosted by Jennifer Lopez and is broadcast on ABC, are based on data collected by Billboard and Nielsen, however, each victor is chosen by the fans, who can start voting for their favorite acts and artists from today.
All three singers are also up for the Artist of the Year category. She also will compete with Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor for best pop/rock female artist and her single “Blank Space” is among the nominees for song of the year.
Enrique Iglesias has the chance to win his seventh favorite artist award in the Latin category, while both Beyonce and Rihanna have the chance to become the record holder in the favorite female soul artist.
