David Warner has 15 days to recover from broken thumb: Darren Lehmann
“The real thing is it’s going to be a different eleven for the first Test in Brisbane to what would have been picked in Bangladesh”.
Injured Australian batsman David Warner is hoping to pick up a bat next week as he prepares for next month’s test series against the Black Caps.
“My goal is to play that Shield game, I want to play that Shield game to have a hit, because I don’t think I’ll be able to get out here and play the last couple of games of the Matador”, Warner said of an injury sustained during the ODIs against England after the loss of the Ashes.
Confirming the news, Cricket Australia said that Warner, Johnson, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Coulter-Nile were added to the squad of 15-players who were meant to visit Bangladesh, Sport24 reported. Players hoping to break into the test side will now have to do so though Australia’s domestic one-day competition.
“We don’t have too many bad blokes in our group”.
While confident he’ll be available to take on the Redbacks, Warner believes he could still perform strongly in the first Test even if he was unable to take part in the Shield clash.
“His thirst for the game is second to none and he trains the house down, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes about it”.
“Because you didn’t have Warner, Hazlewood and Johnson [in the Bangladesh squad], so that’s three players straight away you’d imagine would come back into the reckoning for the first Test. I’ll see on Friday with the x-ray how it is and if it is healed I’m definitely going to pick up a bat”. But batting against bowlers is going to be the key.
Warner showed off the damaged thumb at Australia’s red-ball training camp at Hurstville today, with the digit covered by a protective guard in order to prevent any further damage.
Warner will also need to prove he can again catch a ball without concern of re-injuring himself. “I think they are all good kids”. They know how we want to play and they know how we want to behave and act. We talk about first session of a game, where he can get off strike and how I can help him in any way.
Australian selector Mark Waugh earlier iterated that the youngsters named in the Bangladesh squad will have to wait a bit longer to make their Test debuts due to the return of the senior players.
