Street View For Google Cardboard Brings the Real World Into VR
In a post on the company blog (via VentureBeat), Google wrote: “Finally, to help bring you to more places, you can now explore Google Street View in Cardboard”.
Now, Google has announced that the Cardboard app has been translated to 39 languages and is available in over 100 countries.
The app also includes a whole lot of brand new cool stuff.
Lastly, the search engine giant has updated the Street View app and is now compatible with Cardboard.
“The Cardboard SDKs for Android and Unity have been updated to address your top two requests: drift correction and Unity performance”, Wuest said. All of this adds up to better VR experiences for your users. This particular update will see a major overhaul of the sensor fusion algorithms that integrate the signals from the gyroscope and accelerometer, and as these improvements will substantially decrease drift, especially on phones with lower-quality sensors. But it’s a welcome addition to the app, which allows you to look around the world.
It isn’t quite true virtual reality as the images are in 3D.
For Unity, the Google Cardboard SDK will now support Unity-native distortion pass. With this, it will improve performance by eliminating the need for a plugin.
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) fans can build a Cardboard viewer by downloading an open design.
