Former rap mogul Suge Knight scheduled to return to court
Knight is charged with robbery after a celebrity photographer accused him and comedian Katt Williams of taking her camera in Beverly Hills in September.
She said she believed the child was Williams’ son and only captured video of the boy because he happened to walk into her shot during the verbal exchange with Knight. “I had no idea that it was Suge Knight’s son”, she said, noting that she could have photographed the boy earlier when he was running outside with Williams and didn’t know it was Knight’s son until after the confrontation began.
Coen found there was sufficient to try Knight, 50, and Williams, 44, on one felony robbery count. She said that she had not fought back against the woman.
“Mr. Williams’ involvement was very brief, very fleeting”, Holley said in her closing argument.
“The moment the camera was taken was not depicted by any video”. Knight’s attorney Thomas Mesereau told the judge that the evidence did not support robbery, aiding and abetting, or criminal threats. She said the camera was filming during her encounter with Knight for “safety reasons” and likened it to a police dash camera. Outside the courtroom, Mesereau said he was disappointed by the court’s decision. “Calling someone a bitch is not a felony”.
“The two things he said were going to happen actually happened”, Detective Mark Schwartz testified. Coen ordered the parties back to court for an October 27 for a rearraignment hearing. He did not speak during the hearing and declined to answer questions outside.
Knight was a key player in the gangster rap scene that flourished in the 1990s, and his Death Row Records label once listed Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg among its artists. In court on Tuesday, when the TV cameras moved in Knight’s direction, he wished his 6-year-old son Legend a happy birthday, TMZ reported. He is accused of striking two men with his red truck in the parking lot of Tam’s Burgers on January 29 in Compton.
“I wasn’t aiming at Suge Knight’s son …”
While Knight and Williams pleaded not guilty, Knight will also stand trial for a murder charge after a hit and run incident left one man dead.
