David Bowie has ‘decided to retire from touring’
The news comes as part of an ongoing joke Bowie has with longtime British promoter John Giddings, according to an interview Giddings did with Music Week. “He has chose to retire and, like Phil Collins, you can’t demand these people go out there again and again and again”, he added.
Word out of the United Kingdom this past weekend is that David Bowie will never tour again, despite being in relatively good health and continuing to create new music.
Given Bowie’s capacity to shock and surprise though, and the frequency with which artists “retire” from touring before changing their mind, we wouldn’t rule it out completely.
Bowie’s latest album, the critically acclaimed 2013 LP The Next Day brought about rumors he may return to the stage for extended tours.
Bowie’s last United Kingdom show occurred at Giddings’ own Wight Festival.
Bowie’s last-ever gig thus far took place in the USA, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom back in November 2006.
Bowie’s last trek was “A Reality Tour” in 2003-2004, which ended early so he could undergo surgery for an acutely blocked artery. Bowie experimented with a number of styles, before he returned to the limelight with his new alter ego Ziggy Stardust and the first hit from the The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album, “Starman”.
