With Grier suspended, No. 8 Florida will learn about Harris
It’s a big one – and stunning. Grier was not going to be the best quarterback in the SEC in 2015, but he’d be on a short list for that accolade in the next year or two if this season’s production continued. “I did not check with the medical staff before taking it”, Grier said. “Just really, really sorry”. “I’m just really sorry”.
Grier, a redshirt freshman, tested positive for ligandrol, a supplement used to build lean muscle mass, a source told the Sentinel. The University of Florida refuted those reports but did not disclose what substance Grier tested positive for. The Sentinel noted that Grier gained 14 pounds since the spring and “24 pounds since the start of 2014”.
Hunt’s season ended nearly before it started as he tore his Achilles’ tendon in the first game against Rhode Island and was replaced by backup Eric Dungey.
The school announced the suspension at a news conference Monday and said it will appeal. “We always have to make sure we get all that stuff cleared by them, because stuff like this could happen at any time, especially if you’re not careful with it”.
Call it yet another reminder that even though it’s big time college football, with hundreds of millions of dollars involved, we are still dealing with young men in the 17 to 21 year old age range, and quite simply, they make mistakes, and they break the rules! Doesn’t matter if it’s cough medicine. If this team wants a chance at winning the SEC Eastern Division, it’ll have to rally around the not-so-new guy who already has tremendous respect from his teammates.
“What it means for this football team is next guy up”, McElwain said after an emotional Grier apologized and shuffled off the stage in Gainesville.
“When you have an opportunity to sit down and visit with him and see the remorse and the sorrow, that’s hard”. The first quarterback since Tebow in 2009 to throw for 200 yards in three straight games and the SEC’s leader in completion percentage (65.8) and scramble yards (154) carelessly made a grave mistake by not checking with Florida’s medical staff before putting a supplement into his body. They had weeks to work with Grier, who was taking the majority of the snaps. The offense will be altered somewhat to fit Harris’ strengths, but we won’t know how much until Saturday.
According to Fox Sports, this is Harris’ first time to start a match since their season opener. He is 19-for-27 passing for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
I guess we should have known this fantastic Gator resurgence under new coach Jim McElwain was just another fish story that was too good to be true.
“We’re going to have a great week of practice, we’re going to play our tails off against one of the best teams in the country on their turf”. We haven’t trailed until this game, so there hasn’t been really a need to throw the ball.
Jeff Driskel started in place of Harris in the Tigers’ wild 30-27 win at Florida last October. A sophomore, Bell has not played since the injury although Roback has performed admirably in his absence with 1,242 passing yards and nine touchdowns. Because McElwain and Florida’s athletic department learned of Grier’s suspension following the Missouri game, the Gators will not see any of their six victories wiped away. “This is not an excuse”. “That’s an important thing here, obviously, we didn’t do”.
