Apple raises the roof on App Store prices in Australia
In an email, Apple has notified developers that they are updating prices in the three countries in response to foreign exchange rate variations.
Apple also put it won’t obliterate auto-renewing memberships attributable to the pricetag enhance.
The price increase will also hit Indonesia and Sweden, and will impact app prices, in-app purchases and subscriptions.
Any Aussie Internet user is more than familiar with the “Australia tax” – the slightly higher price companies often ping Australians with when purchasing anything from electronics and software to television and games. Developers will soon have the option to offer apps for $0.99 in a category that has formerly been restricted to “emerging markets”.
Mashable Australia has reached out to Apple for comment and will update when further details about new prices are revealed. The email also includes a link to allow customers to turn their subscription off. 9-to-5Mac says Apple plans to introduce a low-price tier that will enable app developers to charge 99 cents for their apps.
Although we’re changing the prices for auto-renewable In-App Purchase subscriptions, we won’t interrupt them.
At the time of writing, a complete list of revised pricing has not been released, but $1.29 apps will apparently rise to $1.49; an increase of 15 per cent. If the change follows previous price hikes, you can expect each tier to rise between 15% and 30%. That’s a departure from its previous practice of automatically cancelling subscriptions due to a price change, according to 9 to 5 Mac.
