Michelle Obama’s “girl power” Spotify playlist
Michelle Obama is following in her husband’s footsteps, after he released not one, but two playlists in August.
The United Nations-designated holiday – observed on Sunday, 11th October – is created to promote awareness of gender inequality around the world, and #FLOTUS has helped spread the message of sisterhood by grooving to the empowering tunes of Beyoncé, Demi Lovato and Mary J. Blige. With over 4,000 followers, the playlist has songs by icons such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin.
Included in the 20-track playlist are songs from three Broadway musicals: “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, “My Shot” from Hamilton and “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”, as performed by Jennifer Hudson on the original film soundtrack for Dreamgirls.
The “girl power” expressed on the songs “No Scrubs” by TLC and “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child can also be heard, according to Access Hollywood.
This Spotify playlist follows Mrs. Obama’s campaign for women called “Let Girls Learn”, which has an expansion for girls around the world to get an education and also aims at American girls to seize every opportunity that is bestowed before them. The president released a “daytime” and “evening” playlist featuring a range of artists from Bob Marley, Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Otis Redding and more.
