Firefighters Getting A Handle On The Cottonwood Gulch Fire Near Manhattan
There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
Witnesses first spotted the fire at about noon Sunday.
The fire is estimated to be one mile wide and six miles long. About 100 firefighters were working on the fire. Fire officials say 50 residences are threatened and 119 people are responding to the fire. Areas like the Gallatin River Ranch, the defensible space around the homes might have been a big factor as to why there have been no structures lost at this point.
Evacuation warnings have been issued, and several roads in the area have been closed.
The Cottonwood Gulch fire is still burning north of Logan in Gallatin County and was listed at 8,300 acres as of Monday evening and was about 15 percent contained.
O’Connell says the number of firefighters and equipment on the blaze are expected to drop tomorrow.
The National Weather Service also warned of critical fire conditions in dry parts of northern Montana.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire was human-caused, and was likely accidental.
