Nadiya Hussain: My kids had to lie about Bake Off win

During the TV appearance, the Bangladeshi star was also reunited with the woman who inspired her to start baking, her home economics teacher Mrs Marshall.

Nadiya Hussain must have felt a wave of relief when she was named this year’s Great British Bake Off victor – and not just for taking the baking crown, but for finally being able to shout it to the roof that she had won. Every lunchtime, rather than eating in the dinner hall, I’d spend time with Mrs Marshall in her classoom.

The 30-year-old cook from Leeds and her husband Abdal had to tell their three young children, all aged under 10, not to spill the beans on their mother’s victory on the BBC One TV show until it aired and she’s anxious that they will continue to be economical with the truth.

Mrs Marshall said Nadiya’s win was “absolutely amazing”, before she added: “I am so proud, and delighted and thrilled”. Luckily, none of those happened to Nadiya, who actually found herself becoming a role-model, and not just for her glorious piping skills!

“As a process, I just got hooked”. Over four years I got quite good. “I didn’t think I would be in final 12”.

Speaking to presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby she said: ‘We never baked in our family, dessert isn’t something that we ever had, and not something that’s common in our culture. “Now I’m having to train them and say, ‘We don’t lie any more.’ So we’re kind of working on that one now”. “I can and I will”.

Nadiya, who is just 4ft 11in, was backed by David Cameron and managed to reduce the usually composed Mary Berry to tears when she was crowned the victor.

“I don’t know if she’s seen what I’ve done but if she has, I hope she’s proud of me”.

She went on to say: “And when she came into the final today she was nervous but she had the sort of look that “I’m going to do it” and she did. I wonder if she has been watching Bake Off, because she was definitely the person who inspired me”.

The Bake Off judge was so touched by that her voice was shaking heavily with emotion and she could be seen visibly welling up.
