New Smoke Detectors for Marshfield Residents
The coalition plans to install at least 300 free smoke alarms in Idaho Falls. They help families and communities who have become displaced from a fire by providing shelter, food, and clothing. “A single working smoke alarm can cut your risk of death from a fire by 50 percent”, Paulsen says. Fairfield Deputy Fire Chief Jorge Merodio said this week that the majority of fire fatalities occur in the home, and most are related to smoke inhalation and not fire.
Seven times a day someone in the USA dies in a home fire, and countless others suffer injuries. In 2014 alone, one home fire was reported every 85 seconds. While in municipal surveys nearly all households indicate having smoke alarms, in reality smoke alarms are present in slightly less than three-quarters of reported home fires and operated correctly in only half of them. Local building codes vary and there may be additional requirements where someone lives. If they don’t work, replace them.
This year’s effort, “Turn Your Attention to Fire Prevention”, is a joint project of the Biloxi Fire Department, American Red Cross, and Firehouse Subs.
