Paul “Pee-wee Herman” Reubens to play Penguin’s dad on ‘Gotham’
Reuben played Tucker Cobblepot, the father of Danny DeVito’s Oswald Cobblepot, otherwise known as Penguin. Paul Reuben comes back 23 years later to act on a younger version of the character he also portrayed in Tim Burton’s movie. Check out that scene below. The Pee-wee Herman actor will play the Penguin’s father throughout the second series of popular Fox show Gotham. Taylor announced the casting news during Sunday’s Warner Bros.
The actor was so excited actress Erin Richards (who plays Barbara on the show) grabbed his name card and fanned him with it while the audience cheered his enthusiasm.
“So we’re all familiar with Oswald’s mother, the fabulous, fabulous Carol Kane”, Taylor said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Penguin has a father, and it’s one we’ve seen before…albeit not in this universe. Would it be too meta to get Gary Oldman to play Ben McKenzie’s dad for a flashback? Reubens has appeared on a number of TV series, including “The Blacklist”, “Portlandia”, “30 Rock”, “Pushing Daisies”, “Reno 911”, “Everybody Loves Raymond”, FAMILY GUY and “Murphy Brown”. He previously voiced The Riddler in Robot Chicken: DC Comics Special and Bat-Mite in Batman: The courageous and the Bold.
He recently wrapped production on a Judd Apatow-produced “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday”, a reprisal of his signature character for television.
“Gotham” airs Monday nights on FOX.
