Line follows WhatsApp and iMessage with strong encryption for users
The new security feature follows similar moves by other messaging apps including WhatsApp, but Line is taking things a step further by rolling out end-to-end encryption to the iOS, Android and Mac and Windows desktop apps, too.
For this encryption feature to work, all the parties to a conversation need to have it available on the device. In addition to the Line app for Android and iOS, Line can be accessed online through a Chrome extension, on PCs, and other mobile devices. However, the company has plans to switch it on by default for all users. Roll out of encryption feature should increase confidence in use of app. Hidden Chat, time limited messaging feature, and Passcode Lock, a four-digit security pin, are a few examples the available security features.
End-To-End Encryption (E2EE) means that everything is encrypted right before being sent through the network, and only the user has the encryption key, which makes it impossible for a third person to decrypt such content, including LINE itself, since they won’t have they key in their servers.
Back in the days when we used to write actual, physical letters to our loved ones, if you don’t want anyone to accidentally or deliberately read something before it reaches its intended, you would seal the letter with either glue, stickers, stamps, or maybe even all of the above.
