Sash died of accidental mixed drug toxicity
Sash holds the Iowa Hawkeye record for interception return yards. Sash went on to play two seasons for the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl in his first season with the team. Both methadone and hydrocodone are prescribed to deal with pain, although the medical examiner’s report does not specifically mention that.
An autopsy performed on Tyler Sash’s body performed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner shows an accidental mixture of drugs is to blame for his death.
Sash, who recently had dislocated his shoulder and had a history of shoulder ailments (including two concussions), overdosed on methadone and hydrocordone in an effort to see relief from what the medical examiner said were “significant conditions”.
Further tests will be administered to determine whether Sash, 27 at the time of his death, suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a brain disease resulting from repeated trauma.
According to the Associated Press (h/t FoxSports.com), Sash died on September 8 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, after police officers were called “in response to an unresponsive male”. Sash won a Super Bowl with the team in 2012. It has been discovered in the brains of numerous former National Football League players. It will take several months for those results to be available.
