Hutchinson’s 40 saves propels Jets over Rangers
Winnipeg finishes their four game road trip with a solid 3-1-0 record, as they picked up wins in Boston, New Jersey and New York.
ABOUT THE JETS (2-1-0): Mark Scheifele scored one of Winnipeg’s two goals Monday, giving him a tally in each contest thus far.
Despite putting 41 shots on backup goalie Michael Hutchinson, the Rangers struggled to take advantage of their offensive opportunities, especially on the power play.
Henrik Lundqvist, unlike stretches through the first three games, was not able to make up for his teammates deficiencies this time.
The New York Rangers were handed their first regulation loss of the regular season after being defeated 4-1 by the Winnipeg Jets.
The Rangers were 0 for 5 on the power play with all of their chances coming in the second period.
The Jets stayed out of the penalty box in the third while the Rangers were whistled for three penalties. Mark Stuart sealed the deal with an empty net goal with 2:04 remaining. The Jets went two for five on the powerplay but the Rangers dominated at the faceoff dot winning 34 draws to the Jets 22. “They score on the 3-on-1 and to answer that is he for our team, especially with one of our guys getting their first goal”. That included weathering a 20-shot assault by New York in the second period without letting a single one by to keep the game tied 1-1 until his offense got it going late in that frame.
The Rangers got off to a good start when Rick Nash stole the puck inside the defensive zone and broke out 3-on-1, dropping it to Brassard, who dished to Zuccarello steaming down the right wing.
He was caught out of position after the puck took a long bounce off the boards and straight to Alexander Burmistrov heading for the crease. Marc Staal lunged and hot a little piece of the shot by Alex Burmistrov, allowing Lundqvist to sprawl across the crease and get an arm on it.
But the Jets were able to tie it after Kevin Hayes was called for a hook, needing just eight seconds on their own power play before rookie Nikolaj Ehlers ripped a slapper through traffic and past Lundqvist, knotting the game 1-1 going into the second.
