Clinton punches back at first Democratic debate
According to The Washington Post, Hillary Clinton claimed that December of 2007, she warned Wall Street about the big crash. But the debate hall was more sedate than his massive rallies, and the intrusion of his opponents and the moderators placed a reality check on what Sanders prefers – a stream of conscious lecture.
Before they face the Republicans, the Democrats must choose their own candidate.
But Sanders’ kind remarks didn’t buy him a pass from Clinton, who entered the debate ready to undercut his message.
Not on the scene in Las Vegas but on many minds was Vice President Joe Biden.
Clinton aides have long pointed to the debate as a possible turning point for the campaign, an opportunity to move past their summer slump and boost them into the more intense fall primary campaign season.
Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s nearest rival in the polls, wasted no time in displaying his leftist chops, speaking in a tone that for America’s conventional politics, sounded uncompromising, bordering on revolutionary.
Former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee did offer a few mild criticism about Clinton’s trustworthiness in response.
“Like most human beings, I do absorb new information, I do look at what’s happening in the world”, Clinton said.
In contrast, Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, skipped the pleasantries of introducing himself at the debate’s outset and blasted right into a critique of a campaign finance system that’s “corrupt and is undermining American democracy”.
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders speaks to a crowd against a Rocky Mountain backdrop at the University of Colorado in Boulder October. 10, 2015.
Yet in a moment of political unity – and levity – Sanders leapt to Clinton’s defense on the issue of her controversial email practices as secretary of state.
Both Sanders and O’Malley hit Clinton over her call for a no-fly zone in Syria, with the former Maryland governor warning it could cause a clash with Russian forces operating over the war-torn Middle Eastern nation and that as president, he would be less likely to use a “military tool” than she would be.
O’Malley, who referred to Trump as “that carnival barker in the Republican Party”, said the first Democratic fight night only helped cast the GOP in an unflattering light. “Me too”, she replied. And Chafee tried that line of attack Tuesday, suggesting that her vote disqualified her from the White House.
On November 15, 2012, in Adelaide, Australia: “This TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) sets the gold standard in trade agreements, to open free, transparent, fair trade, the kind of environment that has the rule of law and a level playing field”.
Clinton holds a commanding lead nationally despite Sanders’ strong performance in the early states. “I never took a position on Keystone until I took a position on Keystone”.
“I believe in a society where all people do well, not just Wall Street billionaires”, he said.
“No, not at all”, she said, before pointing out that Sanders has five times voted against the Brady Bill, which aimed to curtail gun violence.
