Mexico reaches Russian Federation 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup
That was the last game Mexico won in the series, but a return to Pasadena ended a six-game winless streak for El Tri against the United States.
Paul Aguilar scored Mexico’s second goal of extra time on a stunning volley in the 118th minute to secure a spot for El Tri in the 2017 Confederations Cup with a 3-2 victory over the United States on Saturday.
The victory gives Mexico a berth in the 2017 Federation Internationale de Football Association Confederations Cup, a tournament played every four years in the year before the World Cup in the host nation of the World Cup. The Americans would very much liked to have had that edge. Mexico could have it instead. His grade reaches passing because he also pitched in with a few big blocks and no less than five important clearances between minutes 65 and 90.
National team managers have incredible barriers to imposing a coherent tactical vision, including an inability to swap out pieces and an incredibly small window of time to instruct and train in one’s chosen ideas. For all the promise and hope that accompanied his appointment, there has been little tangible progress to justify his enormous contract.
“That was the game plan to cover their outside backs if they pushed up high”. He was huge in the second half, a highlight his snuffing out an Andres Guardado threat.
Mexico got the quick upper hand in the extra session when substitute Oribe Peralta scored in the 96 minute. Jimenez flicked a back heel to Oribe Peralta into the box, and Peralta laid a pass up for Javier Hernandez for the easy finish.
Tempers frayed in the 34th minute after Peralta, looking to slide in on a through ball, went in hard on U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan, and the Mexican was yellow carded after a goalmouth melee involving several players. That energy and the lackadaisical nature of the Americans both in attack and on defense helped Mexico get on the board first in the 10 minute.
This isn’t to say that it’s time for radical changes, like bringing in 17-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers and 20-year-old Matt Miazga to replace Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler, or Emerson Hyndman to replace Michael Bradley, but it is time to move towards younger, viable replacements for the aging veterans. As he zeroed in on Guzan, Peralta shuffled a short pass to the center of the box for Hernandez to knock in at the left post. Peralta seemed to follow through with his knee as the two were sprawled on the grass, and Guzan took exception.
“You make maybe one in your life like he did it today”, USA midfielder Jermaine Jones said.
In the 32nd, Bradley wasted a gilt opportunity to take the lead.
As the game wore on, the Americans continued to forge chances, toiling and slogging and grinding.
The teams traded chances in the early going, with Mexico on multiple occasions trying to track down poor U.S. clearances inside the box, and Altidore firing in a strike that Munoz saved well. It is the only way to march onwards and ensure such a miserable day does not unfold again any time soon.
However, Yedlin would finally make that impact in the 108th minute. Cameron ran in and headed the ball into the net for the 1-1. The only way the USA can now qualify for the Olympics is by beating Canada on Tuesday and then beating Colombia in a one-game playoff in Rio de Janeiro next March. DeAndre Yedlin played Bobby Wood through the line, who nutmegged Munoz for the goal.
The 61-year-old then was asked about the performance of his players. That floated away into the Southern California sky the moment Paul Aguilar slammed home his superb volleyed winning goal and sent the Rose Bowl erupting into a sea of green joy.
