Polar bear unfazed after encounter with migrants in Calais
A group of migrants attempting to make illegal entry into the United Kingdom were shocked after they prised open a lorry in Calais to find it was occupied by a huge polar bear in transit to a wildlife park in the north of England.
Passengers in a auto behind filmed the sequence, later alerting police who were soon on the scene.
The men were among a group of refugees who stopped a convoy of trucks outside Calais’ notorious Jungle camp at 4am this morning.
Refugees who snuck into a truck in France’s northern port of Calais were given the fright of their lives when it emerged the lorry contained a polar bear, which was being transported to a United Kingdom zoo.
The bear, called Nissan, had been flown by cargo plane from Moscow Zoo to Frankfurt, Germany the previous day, and was bound for Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster via the Channel Tunnel.
Nissan was heading to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, from Russian Federation.
One of the four men immediately ran off in terror, but the other three ignored the danger posed by the animal and jumped in anyway.
The migrants were inside the lorry for about 10 minutes before French police came and removed them.
‘It’s not probably what they were expecting when they opened the back of the lorry. “It shows how desperate they are to get to Britain”.
Nisan had made his way from Moscow Zoo to Frankfurt on a flight but was to travel from the German city to the United Kingdom via road.
The bear, named Nissan, was on the final stages of his 1,500 journey from Russian Federation to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster when the freakish incident unfolded in Calais.
‘We are happy now that we have Nissan here in great shape and I’m sure visitors will fall in love with him once he settles in and is ready to be out in the reserves and be seen by visitors’.
The bears will be introduced over the next few weeks in the purpose-built 10-acre Project Polar reserve created to replicate their Arctic habitat.
