Prosecuction wants ‘prompt resolution’ in Maureen McDonnell corruption case
Mrs. McDonnell was convicted last September for soliciting and obtaining payments, loans, gifts and other items from a political donor and one-time CEO of Virginia-based Star Scientific Jonnie R. Williams Sr.
The U.S. Government has filed paperwork in former first lady Maureen McDonnell’s corruption case.
A hearing on Maureen McDonnell’s appeal had been set for October. 29. He was sentenced to two years in prison; she to a year and a day.
The appeals court has upheld Bob McDonnell’s convictions but has allowed him to remain free while he seeks a Supreme Court review.
The Supreme Court could announce as early as mid-December whether it will hear Robert McDonnell’s appeal.
Holding her case in abeyance, her lawyers argued, would avoid the possibility that the appeals court could rule on issues only to have the Supreme Court go in a different direction.
Prosecutors have 30 days to respond to his petition to the nation’s highest court, which is expected to decide whether to hear the case in the weeks after that. The justices have no deadline for deciding whether to consider the appeal.
