Mumbai man, declared dead, wakes up before post mortem
A man in India was pronounced dead but woke up just minutes before his autopsy was about to start.
The unnamed homeless man in his late 40s had been found by police officers who took him, unconscious and suffering from numerous infections, to a Mumbai hospital on Sunday morning. Rohekar ordered the body to be taken to the morgue with an entry in the casualty ward diary, and prepared a death intimation report.
The man was bought by the police on receiving a call about a man lying unconscious at the ST bus depot at Sulochna Shetty Marg. “This could have led the doctor to believe that the patient was dead”.
Mortuary staff in Mumbai were given a big surprise when a man woke up shortly before a post-mortem examination. The police claimed that the casualty medical officer (CMO) certified him as dead, before sending his body to the mortuary for a post-mortem.
Resident doctors at Sion Hospital have threatened to go on a strike after relatives of a patient with accidental glass trauma to the forearm abused doctors for not attending to him early on Saturday. “The hospital authorities should take action against the person responsible for this incident”.
“Senior Police Inspector Yeshudas Gorde came to the hospital, but the doctors did not let him in and they refused to show us the diary entry about the death”.
“It has been 12 hours since the incident and as the dean is not traceable, no FIR has been lodged by the police against the unruly relatives”, said Dr Mundada.
He told reporters that the doctor who examined Prakash had checked the patient’s pulse, respiration, and heart. Seeing signs of breathing, the attendants rushed the patient back to the casualty ward. “Instead of accepting their fault, doctors of Sion Hospital are blaming cops to save face”.
According to Merchant, Prakash was brought to the hospital with both ears and body parts infested with maggots, which indicated a decomposing condition.
