Uber drivers to receive Amber alerts under new partnership
Starting today and in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Uber driver-partners in over 180 cities across the USA will begin to receive time-sensitive and critical AMBER Alerts specific to their region.
The overarching aim is to have as many eyes and ears on the lookout for anything that could help bring children home safely. “As a new parent myself, I am thrilled that our network can now quickly connect thousands of New York Uber driver-partners with AMBER alerts”.
Beginning this week, the popular ride-hailing service Uber will add extra eyes to the search for missing children by pushing out text messages to its drivers who are in the area where an Amber Alert is issued.
New York City’s taxis already receive Amber Alerts, and local officials praised the move by Uber.
“With so many driver-partners traveling across the city every day, this effort can help make a real difference for our neighbors and communities”, Josh Mohrer, Uber NYC’s general manager said.
Using Uber nation wide could promise a better return as its network of drivers cover 75 percent of the US population.
Robert Hoever, the director of special programs at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, pointed out how huge an asset Uber’s presence in the communities will be. Uber previously piloted the system in Colorado earlier this year, and is now expanding it nationwide.
