BRIDGE COLLAPSE: Construction company speaks out
Paramedics have confirmed that at least two people have died as a temporary scaffolding structure, used as a bridge over the M1 highway for cyclists and pedestrians, collapsed in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Wednesday afternoon.
“He told me that while he was working, there was suddenly a strong wind and after that there was a huge sound – a boom – then the bridge collapsed”, Tandwa said.
News24 reporters were on their way to the scene.
It is meant to be a 5km pedestrian and cycling path joining Alexandra township and the Sandton central business district. However, Netcare911 on Twitter said at least one person was killed while 15 others were injured.
Traffic is badly affected on both sides of the road as emergency workers make the carnage safe and check the wreckage for more casualties.
According to an eNCA report, a minibus taxi was trapped underneath.
“It was very hard for us to arrive at the scene following the incident, as motorists blocked the emergency lane”, Mulaudzi says.
“People that were in the taxi are being treated at the scene for minor injuries”.
An investigation into the tragedy is expected to be launched.
Emergency services are in control of the rescue operations, supported by senior Murray & Roberts personnel and equipment.
