Amid Controversy, Planned Parenthood Is No Longer Accepting Money For Fetal Tissue
Planned Parenthood has been under fire for weeks following the release of several edited “undercover” videos which purport to show organization personnel discussing the sale of fetal tissue. “This proves what CMP has been saying all along: Planned Parenthood incurs no actual costs, and the payments for harvested fetal parts have always been an extra profit margin”.
Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz (CHAY’-fits) says the policy change is a “good, tangible result” of the various House investigations. After the House approved the de-funding measure, Senate Democrats defeated a bill to fund the federal government that included language de-funding Planned Parenthood for one year while the Congressional investigation continues into how it allegedly violated multiple laws to sell aborted babies and their body parts.
In a letter sent to the National Institutes of Health, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said the recent accusations against her group are “categorically false” and that the goal of the organization’s critics has “nothing to do with our fetal tissue donation compliance process”. “Going forward, all of our health centers will follow the same policy, even if it means they will not recover reimbursements permitted by the 1993 law”. “When the attacks in Washington and in states continue, as we unfortunately expect they will, let it be clear once and for all that that they have nothing to do with concern over fetal tissue donation and everything to do with banning abortion in the USA”, Richards added.
“I think we still don’t know the answer to that question”, Post said.
Reacting to news of the end of reimbursements, congresswoman Marsha Blackburn said “it’s about time” the group recognized the need to “end this disgusting practice”.
“Planned Parenthood’s policies on fetal tissue donation already exceed the legal requirements”, Richards wrote, as quoted by NBC News.
Under current federal law, it is legal to donate aborted fetal organs for research and have costs like storage and transportation reimbursed – unless the transfer is for profit. The group has accused Planned Parenthood of profiting from them.
Planned Parenthood’s prime ojective is to provide quality health care services.
She characterized the videos and focus on Planned Parenthood as a “smokescreen” for a broader campaign against a woman’s right to choose whether or not to have an abortion, which was approved by the US Supreme Court in 1973.
At a rally in Spokane, State Rep. Matt Shea likened Planned Parenthood’s actions to those of Dr. Josef Mengele, the “death angel” of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Anti-abortion activist David Deleiden, who conducted the filming of the Planned Parenthood officials, called the changed policy “an admission of guilt”.
Planned Parenthood, a nongovernmental organization that receives federal money, is the largest abortion provider in the country, making it a primary target for groups seeking to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion across the United States.
“For three months, Planned Parenthood has tried to pass off its baby-parts-for-money scheme as totally legitimate”, he said.
