In the current wave of violence, eight Israelis have been killed in stabbing and shooting attacks.

“It is collective punishment”, says Hagit Ofran, an activist with the Israeli group Peace Now.

“If people with knives were roaming the streets of New York and started stabbing people, they would not be asked to present their ID’s, and the NYPD would draw their weapons”, she said on Israel Radio.

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said police in the United States would act no differently in drawing their guns and using them if necessary. The move to install checkpoints followed a decision by Netanyahu’s security cabinet overnight authorising police to seal off or impose a curfew on parts of Jerusalem. Erdan suggested the attackers be buried without fanfare in distant cemeteries where Palestinian killers have previously been buried.

The clashes erupted last month at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City and quickly spread across Israel and into the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

At least 31 Palestinians have been killed for attacking Israelis or throwing rocks and firebombs at Israeli soldiers.
