Microsoft aims to make group chatting easier with Skype
“Wherever you are, whatever device you have – from computer and mobile, to tablet and TV – Skype just works”. Skype for mobile devices now doesn’t have the ability to start a conversation and share a link, though Microsoft is working on that.
To invite users to a chat, Skype users click “+New” in the latest version of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac or Skype for Web to generate and share a unique link. Because it’s just a hyperlink, you can send it over email, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, and so on.
It’s pretty simple: Users of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac, or Skype for the Web will soon be able to send friends a link.
The caveat? It’s available in the US and United Kingdom only right now. Skype for Web supports instant messaging, voice, and video calls. By simply sharing a link, you can chat with someone on Skype without them needing an account or the app. Awesome.
The feature initially seems like just another handy way to get people together for a Skype chat without worrying about whether or not the recipient has the app downloaded and installed.
It is estimated that more than 300 million people use Skype, making it the 8th largest social network in the world, according to research firm Statista.
“Today, were excited to announce something new – a small change that will make a big difference to how people use Skype every day”.
In the case of those without Skype accounts, they’ll be able to sign in to a chat as a guest by typing in their name then clicking “Join”.
