Bautista’s Bomb Boots Blue Jays, 6-3
Bautista said after the game that it was the most “emotionally charged” that he had ever played in, and I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.
Then, and only then, would Joey Bats begin to trot out the home run that would ensure the Blue Jays’ first postseason series victory since 1993. The A’s blew a lead in 2001 against the Yankees, while Cincinnati wasted a 2-0 lead against the 2012 Giants.
These were two teams that battled back from the brink in the division series. They cleared again at the close of the seventh, when Dyson tapped Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the behind – Dyson said in a conciliatory manner – and the two exchanged words.
A postseason baseball game in which the benches clear on multiple occasions is pretty interesting – the kind of thing that gets a few extra attention on nightly highlight shows.
“I can’t really remember what was going through my mind to be quite honest with you“, Bautista said. “Plays we should have made”. A throwback to the mound by Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin caromed off the bat or hand of the Rangers’ Shin-Soo Choo and allowed a run in.
“That was insane”, Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman said. And if you thought that was uncharacteristic, you should have seen what happened in the top of the seventh. After a review of the rules, the run was confirmed. Fans pelted the field with debris during the 18-minute delay.
Defensive disintegration: The Rangers made three errors to start the seventh inning and set up Bautista’s big blow.
The Blue Jays beat the Rangers 6 to 3, with the seventh inning taking nearly an hour to complete, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
When the ball rolled down the third-base line, Odor scampered home to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.
Before Odor reached home plate, though, Scott threw up his arms and called a dead ball, negating the run and sending the runner back to third.
“Now that I’ve had a taste this year, I’d like to win the World Series next year”, he said. “If there’s no intent, if he’s not out of the box, that throw is live”.
The run stood after a lengthy review, and fans responded by throwing garbage and beer cans on to the field.
But the official ruling was complicated.
Controversial, in that Texas Manager Jeff Banister argued the call with umpires, looking for two outs and a double play.
No need for the paperwork, though.
Those plays, in order: a poor throw to second by first baseman Mitch Moreland; a drop of a throw at third by Andrus to load the bases; and after one out, Odor’s poor read on a soft liner from Josh Donaldson that allowed the tying run to score, which brought Bautista up. I feel like I let down my team, my city.
Here’s another video of the home run and a GIF of a second angle of perhaps the greatest bat flip/launch of our generation. “Wait a minute.’… Even if I had not called time, he was on his way, so we scored the run”.
Two months later, it advances on to a national stage. The chaotic atmosphere prompted Encarnacion to try and calm the fans.
Dyson barked at Encarnacion as Bautista rounded the bases and celebrated with his teammates in the dugout, which led to a benches clearing incident.
