Giants CB Prince Amukamara Could Miss 3-4 Weeks
Cornerback Prince Amukamara will be sidelined two to four weeks with a partially torn pectoral muscle, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said today.
Amukamara sustained the injury on the Sunday night victory over the San Francisco 49ers, but it did not slow him; he played 63 of a possible 68 defensive snaps.
Of the players listed on the pre-practice injury report, Coughlin says Cruz, Beckham Jr., Amukamara, Kennard and Casillas will not practice.
If Amukamara is forced to miss any time, Jayron Hosley has been the Giants’ top reserve cornerback this year and would likely move into a starting spot opposite Rodgers-Cromartie.
The Giants’ secondary has been brutal this season and losing Amukamara, their best cornerback, is a big loss. “He’ll have to jump in there and do that, which I’m sure he’s excited about”, Coughlin said. “But we’ll continue on and we will get him back”. Hosley has one career interception in 10 career National Football League starts and 34 games played. “So we must continue on”. He returned to finish the game, which will apparently be his last for a while. While the extent of the injury is not yet known, it is still not good that people are reporting that he could miss what is an extremely important game in Week 6.
Coughlin said he has “a lot more” confidence in Hosley than he had a year ago. Coughlin said he does not have a timetable for Cruz’s return. Linebacker Jon Beason, who left Sunday’s game with a concussion, still hasn’t been cleared to practice but was able to do a few running on the side with the trainers. Wide receiver Rueben Randle (hamstring) and guard Justin Pugh (ankle) will also work.
All of the injuries had Coughlin turning on his sarcasm when asked about having to deal with them during what should be a time of preparation for a key divisional game for a team on a three-game winning streak and in first place.
