Oscar Pistorius to be released from jail on October. 20
Former Olympian Oscar Pistorius will be moved from a prison in South Africa to a formal house arrest for the remainder of his five year sentence in his manslaughter conviction for shooting and killing his girlfriend in 2013.
The parole board made the decision Thursday after an initial decision to release the double-amputee runner in August was canceled.
After Oscar served one-sixth of his sentence, back in August, officials recommended that he be released to house arrest on Aug. 21.
However, before he was released, his case was referred to the Parole Review board.
Prosecutors in the case have appealed the judge’s ruling in the case, saying she incorrectly applied South African law in making her decision and that Pistorius deliberately killed Steenkamp.
Pistorius’s attorneys applied for house arrest, and the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board approved his request granting his release on October. 20, 2015. “The department added in that Pistorius will be under correctional supervision as of Tuesday until October 20, 2019”.
“This experience leaves us with the uncomfortable conclusion that the public, political and media hype that was allowed to develop around Oscar’s trial has undermined his right to be treated like any other prisoner”, the statement said.
The Olympic and Paralympic track star is now behind bars in the capital Pretoria where he is serving a five-year sentence for culpable homicide.
“He’s having his sentence converted to a house arrest sentence”, said criminal lawyer David Dadic. As her family, we do not seek to avenge her death and we do not want Mr Pistorius to suffer; that will not bring her back to us.
Prosecutors are appealing the verdict, believing Pistorius, who is now 28, should be convicted of murder.
The spokeswoman for Pistorius’ family, Anneliese Burgess, said in a text message to the Associated Press that they had been informed of the decision to release Pistorius but would not be commenting further.
This afternoon the Kgosi Mampuru parole board signed off on Pistorius’s probation.
