Letter Sealing launches on LINE, bringing end-to-end encryption to the
“With the advanced security system, it is technically impossible for the chat content to be disclosed in the server or to a third party”, states the company blog post.
Back in the days when we used to write actual, physical letters to our loved ones, if you don’t want anyone to accidentally or deliberately read something before it reaches its intended, you would seal the letter with either glue, stickers, stamps, or maybe even all of the above.
LINE is introducing a new security update to their messaging platform software for better protection, the feature will protect messages from unauthorized access.
While privacy advocates are sure to be pleased about Line’s new security protocol, a few national governments have argued that encrypted messages could enable terrorists to communicate undetected. Meanwhile, it is possible for these users to enable the encryption layer manually – just head to More Settings Chats & Voice Calls Letter Sealing on any device. Also noted is that full encryption will be enabled only when both the parties have Letter Sealing enabled on their devices.
Right now, the feature is somewhat limited; it only works on one on one chat conversations as well as location sharing but LINE says it will be extended around other features and devices at a few point in the near future. However, the company has plans to switch it on by default for all users. “The feature will also be automatically applied for other Android users using multiple devices and iOS users in the near future”. LINE’s messaging platform has a slew of secure messaging features including Hidden Chat and Pass Code Lock.
