First Clip from Upcoming Pixar Short ‘Sanjay’s Super Team’
The clip shows the first 30 seconds of an admittedly short film, but gives us a good idea of the clash between a Westernized son and his religious father. The meditating pair are then joined by three Hindu deities – Durga, Vishnu and Hanuman – who come to life inside Sanjay’s imagination to form a super hero team. You can see that part in the clip above, as Sanjay battles with his father over the television volume before relenting and joining him for prayer. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins day-dreaming a kind of ancient, Hindu version of The Avengers, with the gods appearing like superheroes.
The seven-minute short is based on director Sanjay Patel’s own childhood, thus the name of its lead character – specifically the culture collide he experienced with his devout father growing up in San Bernadino, California.
Patel “didn’t want film to match any deity style”, producer Nicole Grindle said to Variety. In June, Sanjay’s Super Team will premiere at the Annecy worldwide Animation Film Festival in France, the festival announced Tuesday. According to him this story is partly biographical as Sanjay battled through the conflict where his American nativity got him accustomed to superman comics as he performed daily rituals with his parents. Since then he has animated on many of Pixar’s feature films, including Ratatouille, Cars and Toy Story 3. Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) provides the soundtrack for the story, which, like many of Pixar’s other shorts, contains no dialogue.
