Sanders rejects donation from pharmaceutical sheister who increased costs 4000%
Add Bernie Sanders’ name to the long list of people who hate that CEO who massively inflated the cost of an AIDS drug. Although Shkreli has said that his donation for $2,700 went through to the Sanders camp, campaign spokesman Michael Briggs today announced that they will not be accepting the money.
The Sanders campaign said it will donate the money to a Washington-based health clinic instead.
Pharma frat bro Martin Shkreli has reportedly tried to make a donation to the campaign of the guy who danced the dance on Ellen today.
Shkreli, who was hit with widespread criticism last month after he raised the price for the medication Daraprim from $13.50 a pill to $750 a pill, told Stat that he backs a few of Sanders’ other policy proposals, but made the donation because he wanted to meet with him privately and “explain” how pharmaceutical companies set their prices. “We don’t want his stinkin’ money”.
At the first Democratic primary debate on Tuesday, Sanders said he is proud of being tough on the pharmaceutical industry. Despite this shameless act, Shkreli says he is a supporter of Bernie Sanders and that he donated $2,700 to Sanders’ campaign.
Shkreli sparked outrage last month after the New York Times reported that his company had obtained the rights to sell the 62-year-old drug Daraprim and hiked up its price virtually overnight.
Meanwhile, New York’s AG has started an inquiry into Turing, also involving whether the company violated antitrust laws by restricting Daraprim distribution to thwart generic competitors, the New York Times reports.
Mr Shkreli, who said the price increase was needed to fund research, had sought a meeting with Mr Sanders, the left wing senator who poses the biggest threat to Hillary Clinton in the race for the Democrat nomination.
Shkreli responded: “No, in fact, we’re increasing access to patients”.
