Lost Hunter Survives Australian Outback by Eating Ants
A hunter who was lost in the remote West Australian Goldfields for nearly a week without water survived by lying under a tree for days and eating ants.
62-year-old Reg Foggerdy was driving through the Great Victoria Desert with his brother last Wednesday when he made a decision to leave the vehicle to go and hunt a camel.
‘It’s been extremely hot, extremely remote and most people probably wouldn’t have survived, so he’s done a fantastic job, ‘ he said. “He’s dehydrated and a bit delusional but he’s received first-aid treatment on the ground and he’s now sitting up and talking, so we’re looking very positive”, Supt. However, Greatwood still praised Foggerdy’s instincts, saying most wouldn’t have survived in his situation.
Specially trained police officers found Mr Foggerdy after tracking his footprints.
It’s been six long days so it’s a big miracle, ‘ she said.
Trackers with the police Tactical Response Group eventually found tracks left by Foggerdy during his camel chase, and it was easy enough to track them to where the hunter was laying.
The actual moment Mr Foggerdy was found by TRG Trackers Tuesday morning.
After six days in the Outback wilderness his family began fearing the worst.
“That’s the level of survival that Mr. Foggerdy has gone to”, he said.
Greatwood went on to commend Foggerdy for his awesome survival skills.
It is unclear where RFDS will take him but he’s expected to be flown to Kalgoorlie, the closest hospital.
“[The searchers] never lost faith, I was so impressed with the service-they are just unbelievable people”, Foggerdy’s sister, Christine Ogden, told Radio 6PR.
But despite the huge size of the Ozzie outback, rescuers did not give up hope of finding the “experienced bushman”.
The wife also told that the last week had been awful for the family.
