Kerry plans Mideast trip to calm Israeli-Palestinian tension
Those remarks sparked criticism in Israel and the United States, and State Department spokesman John Kirby on Wednesday tried to explain that Kerry did not mean to assign blame to any of the parties for the recent violence.
When pressed on the matter, Kirby conceded that the US had brought up concerns about the use of force in conversations with Israeli officials, and that they had “routinely” done so throughout the years, while trying to downplay the idea that they had any real problem with what Israel is doing on the whole.
In his Harvard lecture this week, Kerry determined that “there’s an increase in the violence because there’s this frustration that’s growing”.
Attempts by Kerry in 2013 to broker a peace accord collapsed previous year, and although he has continued to talk to both sides, he has not tried to resume negotiations on a two-state solution.
The State Department on Thursday refused to list examples of how Israel has used “excessive” force against Palestinians, just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected State’s argument that Israel’s actions have crossed the line.
As tensions continue around Jerusalem’s revered Al-Aqsa Mosque and anger about the killing of a Palestinian baby in July, the situation grew more tense Tuesday after Israel announced new punitive measures against Palestinians who attack Israelis, including sealing “centers of friction and incitement” and the revocation of permanent residency rights of “terrorists” and confiscation of their property.
Kerry specifically addressed foreign plans regarding the U.S.-Israel relationship, the Transpacific Partnership, climate change and global terrorist organizations. We’re always concerned about those kinds of reports. I’ll go back and look at the transcript, but I think you said it had not been – it was not – has not been observed and that is what has led to a great deal of the violence.
“Yesterday we had this discussion, and I didn’t get into detail then, I’m not going to get into detail now”, Kirby replied.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid a visit to Indiana University on Thursday.
