US Airways flying last flight
It will take until late 2016, however, before all the US Airways planes are repainted in American Airlines colors.
US Airways had many memorable moments in history, but few stand out as clearly as the 2009 emergency landing of Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in New York City.
The last ever US Airways flight will depart San Francisco at 9:55 p.m, Pacific Time, and land in Philadelphia shortly after 6 o’clock Saturday morning, according to a report in USA Today.
US Airways dropped Pittsburgh as a hub in 2004 and American Airlines shut down its nearby flight operations control center in August, shifting about 650 jobs to Fort Worth, Texas. It will make additional stops in Phoenix and San Francisco. After a merger with American Airlines, the airline that started as an airmail service so many years ago, will retire their name and services.
There’s another nostalgic note for aviation buffs who get misty about yet another carrier joining the ranks of Pan Am, TWA, Braniff, Northwest, Western and others: Flight 1939 is a red eye.
This airline has been in business for 76 years and now has nearly 6700 daily flights, 100,000 employees and about 8 percent of U.S. domestic passengers.
Passengers will also be flying on an airbus A321 plane that is still painted in US Airways colors.
