Crimson Peak cast reveal their favourite scary movies
Gothic romance, you can go to it straight or you can go…
And because Crimson Peak is a vision brought forth from Gullermo del Toro’s expansive and incredibly creative mind, we are guaranteed a rambling, spooky old house full of nasty nooks and crannies, opulent costumes (honestly, it’s all about the ruffs this season ladies), and grizzly gore galore. Del Toro is one of Hollywood’s most sought after directors who is a stickler for quality. For a long time, he was “ours” – and now he’s so popular with the mainstream.
Every once in a while, a movie comes along that is so intensely, psychologically frightening that you come to the realization that you will never be able to sleep well again. See Crimson Peak if you like horror with your peanuts for a Halloween treat.
A lot of the visual metaphors in “Crimson Peak” would appear heavy handed if they weren’t so stunning and spot-on. When I see a horror flick or haunted house movie, I expect to be scared; plain and simple. And because of that, it is possibly my least favorite Del Toro film of the last 15 years. I am afraid these allusive “bones” stand out too sharply to take much of the plot seriously.
JB: It was a great meeting.
For the most part, I would say he is successful. Suddenly, I got a call asking if I would come meet him. As he was hugging me, he said, “You were the only person on my list for this role”, and so with that sort of thing you connect very quickly. It was at the studio, we were sitting outside, and he was so gregarious and so warm and friendly. There ain’t much perceptible sizzle going on between he and Wasikowska going on, either. Getting excited at the thought of being scared out of your skin? “I tend to think I work really hard…Guillermo works harder than anyone I’ve ever met”.
Little makes sense in this visually rich film from that director of the horror Crimson Peak excess Guillermo del Toro, that has ideas as wispy thin as the ghost – or is it ghosts? – that populates it. They did a great job capturing the spirit of that time period. “Tom and I play brother and sisters in the film”. I’m wondering what your thoughts were when you first read the script because that’s where it all begins. Hiddleston plays a nuanced romantic lead who is both tragic, despicable, and heroic. Like the house it’s set in, it’s a sight to behold, but eventually unable to keep itself together.
In the midst of his business dealings with Cushing, Thomas falls for the industrialist’s daughter and they’re soon married. This is a guy that Edith has known since childhood and it doesn’t hurt that Alan has Edith’s father, Carter (Jim Beaver) cheerleading for him.
What do the lack of over-the-top scares mean for the status of “Crimson Peak” as a Gothic romance?
While all the other folks in town are quite taken with having landed gentry among them, Edith and her father are varying levels of uninterested to outright hostile. In the grand tradition of the Brontës (who probably would have loved Crimson Peak), men in this universe are largely ineffectual despite their tendency to see female counterparts as delicate.
