Volkswagen to recall 8.5 mn vehicles across Europe
Millions more cars are affected worldwide.
Volkswagen has yet to provide a timetable for the USA recall, and has suspended sales of diesel cars there. “Volkswagen is ordered to remove the software from all vehicles and to take appropriate measures to ensure that the emissions rules are fulfilled”.
Volkswagen’s managing director in Britain, Paul Willis, told a committee of British lawmakers Thursday, “I don’t think there is more to come out”, regarding whether the automaker has more messy revelations to inform the public about with its scandal.
The massive recall in all 28 of the EU’s member states will begin in January 2016 while for countries outside the bloc, the company is still examining which vehicles were affected, VW said in a statement on Thursday.
Taking all of that into consideration, Volkswagen themselves have stated that these recalls could last until at least the end of next year giving fuel to speculation that the company cheated on other engines besides the 2.0-liter diesel.
In the US, the EPA stated that the agency expects to hear from Volkswagen within the next week with a solution to the problem.
“The deception is a serious violation of the Clean Air Act, for which [former] CEO Martin Winterkorn says he is personally deeply sorry, and he promises the company will do whatever is necessary to reverse the damage this has caused”.
Volkswagen Group will start a service action for 8.5 million diesel vehicles in Europe, fitted with a defeat device.
A Volkswagen spokesman said the company is reviewing the KBA’s decision. Dobrindt said only 2.4 million Volkswagen diesel cars with the software are still registered in Germany.
As the Two-Way has previously reported, the USA already ordered the recall of almost 500,000 diesel cars with the illegal software.
