Facebook admits it might be killing your iPhone battery life
In a report by BGR, the Facebook mobile app may constantly “steal” power and quickly drain the battery of your iPhone because of the background app refresh feature.
He suggested Facebook employs “various tricks” to keep on munching battery life when it is running in the background.
Facebook has recently been made aware of the issue, even though it’s been happening for years according to a few users.
Several sites have attempted to theorize on the cause behind the overzealous battery drain, including MacStories, hypothesizing that the reason behind the bug could be silent audio emanating from the service’s auto-playing videos.
Your Facebook addiction could be costing you more than just anxiety over how many likes you’re getting.
When your battery falls to 20 percent, a notification prompts you to enable Low Power Mode, a setting that conserves your precious charge by disabling non-essential tasks such as visual effects, automatic downloads and background activity.
He called on Apple to stop “shady practices” which allowed apps to blaze through battery life and claimed Facebook’s own app had been an iVampire for several years. The kicker: Galligan had explicitly turned off Facebook’s permission to run in the background from his Settings app. “Better still, remove the Facebook app from your phone, and perhaps replace it with [Facebook’s U.S.-only] Paper”.
It’s unclear why Facebook would intentionally skirt Apple’s rules and cause its app to run in the background at all times.
This will place a bookmarked shortcut to Facebook’s mobile web page on your home screen that performs the same function as Facebook’s iOS 9 app, but won’t destroy your battery in the background. The company is tight-lipped about the issue here, only stating that it will be out with the fix soon, so we can’t yet say if this was just a bug or an annoying background feature gone rogue. There’s plenty of distrust for Facebook in the tech community, so it’ll end up taking one on the chin this time around.
