Nathan MacKinnon: MacKinnon’s quick strike all Avs need
The winless Ducks remained so Friday night as the Colorado Avalanche took advantage of their struggles, picking up a 3-0 victory at Honda Center.
“Mentally, I was confident and I saw the puck really good”, Berra said. “We just got to make sure we’re playing the right way”.
Berra made 35 saves in his second consecutive appearance. They blocked a lot of shots. Their scoreless streak is more than 163 minutes and they have been outscored 10-1 this season.
The Avalanche will go with Reto Berra between the pipes, per Colorado’s official Twitter account. We have a lot of great players in here. They got scoring chances and showed more of an attack.
The Avalanche amassed 41 blocks, 18 of them in the third period, to the Ducks’ 12. The one goal came from defenseman Sami Vatanen at 1:56 of the second period in Monday’s home opener against Vancouver.
The Canes captain and Versteeg each had three-point nights with a goal and a pair of assists during a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings. But it is enough time to see what the teams need to work on in practice. What are the reasons the Ducks haven’t scored much in the opening? “Once that happens, it should be a snowball effect”.
The Ducks (0-3-1) have scored one goal in 245 minutes of regulation and overtime play.
Nathan MacKinnon continued to center Gabe Landeskog and Alex Tanguay on Friday against Anaheim, and he scored a goal just 53 seconds into the game. When speaking to the media, Patrick Maroon stated, “It makes a big difference when guys are having fun and smiling on the ice, and enjoying the morning skate”.
The score does not quite tell the story of the game, however, as Anaheim put over 80 shots toward Colorado’s net with the Avs blocking even more shots than Berra stopped.
A few of that came from getting five (obviously unsuccessful) power play opportunities to just two for Colorado, but most people won’t be that interested in those numbers. The Ducks launched 15 shots in the period. Skille scored his first goal of the season by powering a slap shot between Andersen’s legs from the left-wing boards near the face-off circle.
John Mitchell added an empty-net goal for the Avalanche.
Andersen finished with 22 saves. The other scratches were Brandon Gormley and Borna Rendulic. Avalanche RW Jarome Iginla needs one point to tie Hall of Famer Norm Ullman for 39th place all-time with 1,229 points…. During their first two games, the Colorado Avalanche illustrated this point perfectly. Anaheim scratched D Clayton Stoner, C Shawn Horcoff and C Mike Santorelli….
The Avs will wear their new third jersey – which stylistically at least pays homage to the old National Hockey League Colorado Rockies’ design without duplicating it – next Saturday against Carolina at the Pepsi Center. The jersey features the original Mighty Ducks logo on a field of orange….
