Migrants head to Slovenia after Hungary border crackdown
No arrests have been made.
Confirming “operational talks” with Croatia, Slovenia said it would convene its national security council on Saturday.
Hungary has closed its border with Croatia in an effort to stem the flow of migrants through the country en route to western Europe. Their nationalities haven’t immediately been identified. “Seeking asylum is a universal human right and not a crime”.
“They are fleeing from war…”
German government also reacted to the Hungarian decision.
“They are risking their lives and nobody is able to stop this flow… without shooting”. He adds “this organized system of receiving people is something that is giving a better security situation”. Experts fear the move will leave thousands of migrants stranded in Croatia, which is “ill-equipped” to deal with them.
It came after a young man from Afghanistan was accidentally shot dead by border police in Bulgaria when he was caught travelling through the country with an undocumented group of refugees.
Thousands of people arrived on Friday and Saturday in Slovenia, said Bostjan Sefic, state secretary at Slovenia’s interior ministry. Most of the people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia want to reach rich European Union nations such as Germany.
Slovenia said it would beef up border controls and create entry points for migrants to manage the influx, but would keep accepting migrants as long as Austria and Germany kept their borders open.
The victim was among a group of 54 migrants spotted by a patrol near the southeastern town of Sredets close to the Turkish border and was wounded by a ricochet after border guards fired warning shots into the air, officials said. A total of 186,093 migrants have entered Croatia since the beginning of the crisis.
Croatia is a member of the European Union but unlike Hungary, it is not part of the Schengen zone of passport-free travel.
In preparation for the migrants’ arrival, a large white tent was erected at the crossing, where Slovenian authorities carry out identity checks, before taking the migrants to one of several refugee camps.
Another child was missing, the Greek coast guard said after rescuing 13 people.
Anatolia did not indicate the Migrants’ nationalities.
“The bus is on the border crossing (Gruskovje) and the migrants will now go through a registration process”, police spokesman Bojan Kitel told Reuters. Unlike other countries, Slovenia had time to prepare… The plan could spur progress toward a “road map” for dropping the EU’s visa requirement for Turks, the leaders said in a statement after the summit.
“Slovenia will not close its border unless Germany closes its border, in that case Croatia will have to do the same…”
From midnight to 9 pm on Friday, 4,986 migrants entered Croatia. The country was expected to redirect the migrant flow to Slovenia.
Hungary’s closure of its border with Croatia comes just a month after it shut its frontier with Serbia, which was another transit route to Western Europe.
