Clinton, Sanders even in NH post debate poll
On morning cable news programs, Granholm could barely contain her glee.
And Clinton is the only Democrat talking seriously about the difficulties the party’s agenda will face in a GOP-controlled Congress, and the only Democrat I can see actually getting to the White House to try and advance that agenda.
Both Sanders and Clinton were looking to build Wednesday on their strong Democratic presidential debate performances as the rest of the field struggled to gain traction.
Clinton’s leftward lurch is in part a response to Sanders’ push for universal health care, Social Security expansion and free public college tuition, among other expensive ideas. She’s a Washington insider in an election cycle where voters have shown more interest in outsiders. The campaign is mapping out a strategy to convert its fundraising and enthusiasm into a winning organization that can compete in the early states and a slate of “Super Tuesday” states on March 1. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), former Sen.
“This campaign is in it for the long haul”. “We’re going to have the resources to go all the way to the convention”. But Dennis Goldford, a political science professor at Drake University, said “I don’t think he did anything to add supporters”.
Finally, he declared of Clinton’s email mess, “This may not be great politics, but I think the secretary is right… that the American people are sick and exhausted of hearing about your damn emails!” Clinton reached out to shake his hand, and the largely partisan audience stood and applauded. Of the Democrats debating, he was the most retweeted of the evening.
Among men, 52% backed Clinton in the May survey, that fell to 32% in the new poll, while 47% now support Sanders.
Certainly Sanders can never return to it. As for the others, CNN moderator Anderson Cooper prodded Lincoln Chafee on Clinton’s email immediately afterward, and he mumbled something about American credibility after the intelligence failure in the run-up to the Iraq War. She referenced Republicans a dozen times during the two-hour debate, even putting the party alongside the Iranians and National Rifle Association on a list of enemies she was proud to have made. That’s four states that beat out Rhode Island, not one.
Second, Las Vegas wasn’t much of a road test of the issues bedeviling her candidacy.
On immigration, a CBS News/New York Times poll last month showed 58 percent of Americans said people living in the US illegally should be allowed to stay and apply for citizenship, a position Clinton supports.
However, he quickly moved back to praising the Democrats on stage Tuesday night.
Clinton, meanwhile, already is widely known to the electorate. He had put away the email issue for the debate – and perhaps for the duration of the primary campaign.
But Sanders was forced off that message to defend his more moderate record on guns by noting that he represents a rural state, said Democratic strategist Joe Trippi, campaign manager of Howard Dean’s presidential campaign in 2004.
In a scene too absurd to make up, the Dems who like to compare Wall Street to a casino met at an actual Vegas casino owned by a GOP mega-donor for the first-ever debate broadcast in “virtual reality” (don’t ask, don’t bother) and the first-ever debate live-Tweeted by Donald Trump (same).
