IU blows 28 point lead in loss to Rutgers
Carroo appeared to injure his right ankle when an Indiana defensive back rolled over him on his 43-yard scoring reception late in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights were down 17-13 in the second quarter after Laviano connected with Carroo on a 58-yard touchdown pass with 12:50 left and the Hoosiers pushed the lead back to 11 on Sudfeld’s 6-yard pass to Fuchs.
The Scarlet Knights erased a 25-point second-half deficit, scoring the final 28 points of the game to beat Indiana 55-52 on a last-second field goal.
Even when things are at their bleakest.
Now the Rutgers Scarlet Knights have a record of 2-2, and have posted a corresponding record of 1-3 against the spread.
The Scarlet Knights trailed the Hoosiers, 52-27, with 5:25 left in the third quarter.
Martin then scored on a 3-yard TD run to make it 52-46, and Paul James tied it at 52 on a 40-yard TD run with 6:29 left. The extra point was blocked. On the other hand, with 4 Wins and 0 losses, Indiana Hoosiers gained 473.0 total yards on an average including 179.0 passing yards (with 31.0 passing attempts having completion percentage of 48.4) and 294.0 rushing yards per game. Nobody is likely to play much defense, while two offenses that can put up points in a hurry should unleash the fireworks. I’ve got Rutgers by a score after a wild affair.
The first half featured 670 combined total yards, with Indiana totaling 351 and Rutgers tallying 319.
Chris Laviano led Rutgers by going 28 of 42 for a career-high 386 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Sudfeld had a 300-yard game 23 minutes into the game, finishing the half with 301 yards and two touchdowns on 21-for-27 passing while Laviano threw for 216 yards and two scores on 17-25 passing.
Numbers of Note: 14, the number of quarters Indiana had gone without turning the ball over until an interception against Penn State last Saturday. He also ran for a touchdown and moved into a tie for second on the school’s career list for touchdown passes (45).
Other standouts for IU were sophomore receiver Simmie Cobbs, who had 104 yards on six catches, and junior receiver Mitchell Paige, who had 79 yards on five catches.
The Knights improved to 3-3 with the win. “We just gotta pay attention to the little details and just finish the game”. “We’ve just got to bring it all together and lock arms and really ride the season out”.
But Rutgers refused to go down and the Hoosiers early sideline celebration proved costly.
After the win, Rutgers’ Director of Recruiting E.J. Barthel captured video of the team and head coach Kyle Flood singing the university’s alma mater with the contingent of fans that made the trek to Bloomington. “It takes tough-minded people, and I think we have that”.
