Freeze Warning For KELOLAND
Warmer temperatures will follow for the week, with lows climbing from mid-30s Monday night to almost 50 degrees by Thursday night.
After a chilly morning, the sun will warm temperatures into the upper 50s Saturday afternoon with light east to southeast winds under 6 miles per hour. White, non-shaded areas in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan previously experienced the effective end of their growing season. A frost advisory is when temperatures are between 33-36 degrees.
What exactly is the difference between “frost” and “freeze”? Temperatures for highs are a good 20 degree cooler from yesterday! Generally we use 37° as the benchmark for frost formation. Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it frequently occurs with a thermometer level temperature in the mid-30s. In fact, not one location in the entire state of Illinois has seen its first freeze of the fall. With this cold air mass overhead along with clear skies and light winds, conditions conducive to a hard frost/freeze will be maximized.
You can’t cover everything, so gardening experts say you should focus on protecting the annuals that are still left out and a few geraniums.
It’s time to bring in the plants.
A few flowers can last until November if covered during the cold. Temperatures will level off next week but continue to be slightly cooler than normal.
