Calif. Lt. Gov. Newsom to introduce new gun control measures
A staunch Democrat running for governor in 2018, Newsom is set to announce the proposition Thursday in San Francisco where he will be joined by co-authors of the measure, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The authors say that more than 17,000 Californians who are prohibited from owning firearms now have guns.
Newsom said these public provisions provisions will make California safer, but a few National Rifle Association members aren’t buying it.
He has no major financial backers yet, Newsom said, but “I have no doubts that we’ll able to raise the resources to get our message out”.
“His ballot initiative proposal does nothing but prohibit access to the most effective methods for self-defense, with no measurable positive effect on stopping crime or improving public safety”, said NRA spokeswoman Amy Hunter. “But you can’t intimidate the public, which is why we’re bringing this directly to the public”.
California illustrates the true gun control agenda, which is the ultimate confiscation and banning of firearms.
Newsom’s proposal comes just two weeks after a gunman killed nine people at a Roseburg, Oregon, community college, the latest in a long series of mass shootings that have prompted calls for action from President Obama and others.
Newsom’s measure would require owners of such magazines to turn them in to police for destruction, sell them to a licensed firearms dealer or move them out of the state, according to the Sacramento Bee – the same requirement adopted by San Francisco supervisors and Sunnyvale voters in 2013.
Predictably, the survey shows the top candidates poll best in regions of the state where they’ve lived, worked and are most well-known. “They can’t repeal the Second Amendment, so they’re trying to chip away our rights until there is nothing left”, she said.
– Background checks for ammunition purchases: Ammunition dealers would need to conduct a background check at the point-of-sale for all ammunition, and dealers would need a license similar to those required to sell firearms.
“If Gavin Newsom wants to declare war on law-abiding gun owners and Second Amendment rights, we’re certainly going to bring the fight to him”, Firearms Policy Coalition President Brandon Combs said in a statement. Under his plan, any California citizen who possesses a large capacity magazine would have to get rid of them. No other state requires background checks for ammunition purchases. Brown has signed legislation this year banning concealed carrying of handguns on campuses, however.
The last hot California governor’s race was in 2010, when Republican billionaire Meg Whitman spent $144 million of her own money but lost badly to Jerry Brown when her campaign collapsed after it was revealed she had hired a housekeeper who was an illegal immigrant. State law already bans manufacturing or selling magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
Whatever the political motivations behind Newsom’s gun safety proposal, however, they appear to be secondary to his moral ones.
